9.2 Excellent

The Nexus 6P Toast cover is very well-made and fits the device perfectly. Not only does the Toast wooden cover add much need grip to the 6P, it gives it a distinct look that is not rivaled; not even by one of the many other skin manufacturers. It's a little difficult to install and takes patience, but it is totally worth it.

There are two things that seems to be the M.O. of smartphones in 2015: let’s make the device as thin as possible and as slick as possible. Manufacturers are constantly trying to make phones thinner and sleeker to appeal to consumers, but they forget the one thing that matters most: grip. We have seen it on many devices this year, such as the Galaxy S6/S6 edge, Note 5, and even more recent, the Nexus 6P.

While some companies such as dBrand or Slickwraps make vinyl wraps that add looks, they don’t seem to add much grip. That is where Toast comes in. Toast makes skins for devices that are a little more… intuitive. They go a step beyond the skin by using natural wood to not only add much needed grip, but add a unique, and appealing look.

As you can see in my Nexus 6P review, I am a huge fan of the device, both the overall design and feel. Even though the device is a tad slick, I am not a case fan at all. Not only do they hide the design of the phone, they aren’t the most visually appealing things. That’s where the Nexus 6P Toast wooden cover comes in. Not only does it add some protection, it doesn’t detract from the design of the Nexus 6P.

I reviewed the Nexus 6 Toast wooden cover a while back, and my experience was more than fantastic. My order was shipped out the same day as my order and I received it within three days. This time around, Toast sent me the Nexus 6P wooden cover to review, so let’s get at it.

The last Toast cover I applied on my original Nexus had a lot less angles and curves to deal with, so installing the wooden cover on my Nexus 6P was a learning experience. It wasn’t too hard to lineup, as the 6P has a good amount of points to refer off, such as the mic, camera visor, and fingerprint sensor. I had to take it off and give it another go because the power button, volume rocker, and SIM card slot were just slightly off, but no big deal.

The laser cut wood is made perfectly for the Nexus 6P, so there is no need to worry that it won’t fit correctly when you put it on, you just have to be patient. Once I got it on, I just sat there and looked at it for a bit. Toast really outdid themselves on this wooden cover, because when the device is face down, it’s like the 6P came out of the factory this way. Toast also did a good job about leaving open space by both the headphone jack and USB Type-C port. You can easily plug in headphones all the way without being stopped by the wooden cover.

The Nexus 6P Toast cover handles every curve on perfectly and leaves no gaps or openings. It also comes Nexus 6P Toast wooden cover buttonswith wooden inserts for the power button, volume rocker, and SIM card slot, because without them, they’d be too recessed to press. The buttons still maintain their tactile-ness and clicky-ness, I found it is just a good idea to rub off some of the adhesive off the sides of the inserts to make the fit more smooth.

After I applied the back, which is definitely the hardest part of the process, it was time to apply the front skin. This one was much easier to apply due to the fact that there are no curves and it is flat. Using the front-facing speakers as a reference, it went on like a breeze. It really rounds out the whole device and adds a bit of an lip to the front of the device. It makes it a little safer to set your device face down with the wood, not the glass being the resting point.

Even though the wooden skin wraps around the entire device on to the sides, you don’t have to worry about it peeling up. Toast uses very high quality adhesive that won’t damage the device, but keeps the cover on for the long haul. I have used a Toast cover before, and I had no signs of peeling, even after months of use.

If you find yourself looking for a way to add grip and protection to your Nexus 6P, be sure to go check out Toast. I have had nothing but positive experiences with them. Not only do they offer up a few different options for wood type (Walnut, Ash, Bamboo, and Ebony), but you can customize it even more by adding custom etchings. Think of it as a Moto Maker for after you already purchased your device. The possibilities are endless.
