Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) Could Bring Samsung’s Biggest Crease Improvement Yet

Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could feature a significantly thicker layer of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) than previous Galaxy Fold models.

According to a report from ZDNet Korea, the device is expected to use 60-micrometer UTG, compared to the 45-micrometer glass reportedly planned for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung has gradually increased UTG thickness in recent years, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 using glass measuring around 30 micrometers.

The thicker glass is intended to make the foldable display crease less noticeable while also improving resistance to drops and impacts. However, the report notes that thicker UTG can increase the risk of the display cracking when folded, highlighting the balancing act manufacturers face when designing foldable screens.

The same report claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be a relatively minor upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold 7. If accurate, Samsung may be taking different approaches to its next-generation foldables rather than treating them as near-identical devices with different branding.
