Samsung has been churning out new phones almost every week, and phones like this are not doing it any favours. The Galaxy Core Prime reminds me of the old Galaxy Y duos. The only thing new i see is the LED flash at the back. The Deisgn of the entry level and mid range are so similar these days that its almost impossible to differentiate one from the other, and while the Big Boys in the smartphone market are now only focussed on producing top notch flagships, they cannot forget the fact that its the entry level devices which help drive sales in the Big market countries. The Galaxy Core Prime may don the Galaxy Name and wear the Samsung badge with pride, but is it really worth the time and money ?
Lets check it out –
- Connectivity – We get 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity, which conforms with the current industry norms. So, connectivity wise, this phone passes through without a hitch. There are two variants – The single sim and the Duos Dual sim versions.
- Display- Underwhelming 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 480 * 800 pixels. The entry level phones these days come with atlas a 720p display. This resolution will not take the Core Prime anywhere. Also, there is no screen protection by gorilla glass. Overall, a very disappointing and vulnerable display package.
- Processor – The Core Prime hosts the Snapdragon 410 chipset with a quad core 1.2 GHz Cortex A53 processor. This is definitely entry level processor specifications . We cannot expect miracles from this phone, and heavy multi tasking is almost a no no.
- Memory and RAM – We get 1GB of RAM and 8 GB internal memory. We also get the micro SD slot which can host upto 64 GB of expandable memory. The Memory package is decent for an entry level device, nothing special whatsoever.
- Camera – We get a 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 2 MP front camera. This camera package means the phone is neither a hero in the rear camera nor front camera sections as far as the entry level benchmarks go. The video recording is also restricted to 720p.
- OS – The phone boots Android 4.4.4 kitkat, with no confirmation of the 5.0 upgrade. Looking at the specs so far, I really doubt this device will be included in the upgrade cycle.
- Battery – The Core Prime comes with a 2000 mAh battery, which will serve you for at least a day, since there is nothing much to do on this phone.
All in all ,this is yet another phone to be forgotten in the entry level battlefield. The underwhelming specifications and the sheer competition from the newcomers is enough to dump this phone in the bottomless abyss.
Next time Samsung wants to enthral the world with an entry level warrior, I think they should up the ante and really show why they are boss in the smartphone arena.
