Google has been dominating the smartphone/tech news headlines as of late, most notably with their new devices the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 and the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop. While some of today’s news as to do with the former, something bigger came about today.
Google and longtime partners LG, who co-created the most-popular Nexus device to date (Nexus 5), have agreed to a long-term patent cross-licensing agreement. The agreement, which spans 10 years will cover a wide products and technologies. The official press release statement can be read below.
“We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG,” said Allen Lo, deputy general counsel for patents at Google. “By working together on cross-licenses like this, companies can focus on bringing great products and services to consumers around the world.”
“LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives,” said J.H. Lee, executive vice president and head of the LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center.”
The two companies have long been partners, coming together for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. One can imagine that this only solidifies their future together and will most likely release another Nexus device sometime in the future.
The Google Play Store has been ‘out of inventory’ ever since a few minutes after Google opened up pre-orders for the Nexus 6 on October 29th. That will change tomorrow.
According to the new Nexus 6 store page, Google will work to have devices in stock every Wednesday. The problem is, they don’t say what time that it will be up and running. The first time the device went up for pre-order, it was around 12 to 12:30 (central standard time) when the site went live, so we expect it to be no different.
It also says that devices will be available for pre-order through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular later this month. One major carrier is missing from this message, and that once again is Verizon Wireless. Verizon was expected to carry the Nexus 6, but they didn’t support the Nexus 5, so who knows.
Dates for individual carriers have not been mentioned, but we have contacted T-Mobile, and the have said multiple times that the device will launch on November 12th.
